Mulch can be applied anytime throughout the year. However, the most popular time is in the Spring and Fall seasons. When mulching around established plants, it is best applied in early spring as this is when plants are beginning to grow and before unwanted weeds and grass start to germinate. You should mulch new plantings right after you plant them.
The areas should be cleared of all weeds, leaves, grass and debris. If you are preparing an area on an established lawn, make sure you remove the sod completely. Edge around the entire border of your landscape area. If you are replenishing the mulch on an existing area, be sure to loosen the old mulch. Install a total depth between 2.5 to 4.0 inches, not allowing the mulch to make direct contact with plants and trees if possible. This avoids potential disease problems, decay caused by wet mulch, and rodent damage.
We recommend you mulch 2.5 - 4.0 inches deep. This amount is enough to provide all the normal benefits and yet still be easy on the budget. In addition, more than 4 inches can sometimes lead to counter productive issues. Avoid piling-up the mulch on the plant stems or tree trunks as this could cause stem rot and/or limit the plants intake of oxygen. It is recommended after the initial install to simply add 1 - 1.5 inches (or more if needed) per year to maintain a healthy environment and rich color. To figure how much to buy you can go to our mulch calculator found under "How Much Mulch Do I Need."
Mulching is a very important practice for establishing new plantings, because it helps to conserve moisture in the root ball of the new plant/tree until the roots have grown out into the surrounding soil. The growth rate and health of trees and shrubs increases when there is no competition for water and nutrients from weeds. Mulch also helps to prevent tree trunk injury by mowers and trimmers. Mulch can also be used to cover areas where grass is difficult to grow, play areas, and nature spaces.
This will depend on what kind of mulch you get and how fresh you like your landscape to look. To keep most wood mulches looking fresh you will need to mulch every year since they tend to break down, enriching the soil. Colored mulches will fade. To keep them looking fresh, you may need to top-dress them every year. Top dressing is applying about 1 - 1.5 inches of material on top of existing material.
It will depend on your bed preparation and how deep you apply the mulch. Mulch will help eliminate many of your weeds and make any that do come up easy to pull. For a totally weed free bed it is best to use a weed barrier and then mulch.
There are many different types of weed barriers, however we like to install a woven material. The material is treated to resist decomposition and uses multiple-layer technology. In addition, the material allows water and air to freely get to soil but does an excellent job of preventing almost all weed growth.
Any organic material has the capability of drawing insects or bugs. This is not a bad aspect though, as it is a part of the natural cycle of the earth. The mulch should not attract any more bugs or insects than would normally already be there.
Color enhanced mulch is sometimes still wet when delivered and the colorant can leave a non-permanent stain on everything it touches. Although, it is sometimes possible that it will wash off if you do it right away. In addition, if it is fresh or wet the colorant may "bleed" off the mulch if hit by rain or garden hose water within the first day or two after installation. It usually takes about 48-hours to dry and take a permanent set; you will want to be aware of the weather forecast. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you have a tarp laid out on the driveway or area where the product is to be delivered (large enough to extend past the amount of product that is to be dumped). In addition, it is also recommended that the customer cover the mulch once delivered to protect in the event of rain.
The double ground shredded mulch forms a fibrous mesh on the surface of the ground that holds in place much better than standard bark or chipped mulch products. If the mulch will be installed on a hill or in a high water flow area, please be sure to order the proper type of mulch.
It will depend on the type of mulch ordered, but in general the mulches are made from predominantly hardwood blends, cedar, oak, or pine.
No. The dyes used are environmentally safe. The dyes are non-toxic, non-hazardous, and safe to plants, children and pets. They are EPA approved and eco-friendly.
We do have a minimum sales order required for a delivery to be scheduled. The smallest amount of bulk landscape mulch and topsoil we deliver is 2 cubic yards.
We will do everything we can to schedule deliveries at your convenience. Occasionally, accidents, breakdowns, or delays happen and we will notify you if there will be delay of your order. Our recommendation is to always try to schedule a delivery several days in advance. We need a valid recognizable address for delivery and clear indications of where you want the product dropped. Please consider before ordering whether there is enough space for our truck to enter and maneuver the site. Advise the driver of any utilities or underground conditions as well as any other issues to be aware of. If we have an adequate description of the location for dumping/placement of your product, you do not need to be present at the time of delivery. NOTICE: If you place an order and then decide to cancel the order, please give us a minimum of 24 hours notice of cancellation prior to the scheduled time/date of delivery. Otherwise, it will be necessary for us to retain the delivery fee. We will fully refund the cost of the product itself however.
There is a 2 cubic yard minimum. We cannot combine different bulk landscape products on the same delivery truck. NOTE: Although we take great care during our deliveries, we enter your property at your request and risk. Mulch Kingdom will not be responsible for any possible damage to driveways, sidewalks, overhanging trees, etc (please see Terms and Policy of Use Section). Off-driveway dumping requests are handled on an individual case basis. Our drivers know the trucks and their capabilities, they will evaluate the conditions and make the final decision about whether dumping in the off road location specified. Please have an alternative dump location planned and relayed to Mulch Kingdom in the event our driver is not able to dump at the originally specified location. Keep in mind that our trucks have a wide turning radius and may not be able to negotiate tight turns in your yard or driveway.
